Graduation

Our travels begin tomorrow. For the most part, we’re ready. Our devices are fully charged.  Our luggage is underweight (for now). We’re carrying a small pharmacy in case someone eats another 1000-year-old egg. (If you have a strong stomach and 15 minutes to spare, ask Pastor Brad about that adventure!)

This week, however, our primary focus has been on another part of our sabbatical journey.  This week Ellie graduated from Penn High School.

As you can see from the pictures, my 91-year-old mother was able to join us for the festivities.  Except for my father-in-law’s wife Pam, she is the last grandparent standing.  It’s not always easy for her, but she represents her generation well.

Brad and I drove mom back to Ft. Wayne the day after graduation.  We planted a few things, cleaned out her freezer, and dug through the old toy chest full of slides.  No, not Google slides.  Not PowerPoint slides.  Kodak slides. Remember those?

Once home, we plugged the vintage slide projector into the wall, fitted the wheel of slides in its place, and crossed our fingers.  This is what we saw.

Our travels begin tomorrow.  But the journey of celebrating the shoulders on which we stand…the people who have rooted and grounded us in love…has already begun.
